Alan McBride, the organiser behind the Sobell Bridge Club in Northwood, wants to extend a warm invitation to all bridge enthusiasts in the local sports community. Nestled in the grounds of Mount Vernon Hospital, the club is open to players of every skill level and offers a spacious, well-ventilated playing area. While masks aren't mandatory, Alan kindly asks players to respect the preferences of those who feel more comfortable with them.
The club hosts face-to-face bridge sessions on Thursday evenings, Saturday afternoons, and Sunday evenings. Thursdays and Saturdays feature duplicate bridge, while Sundays offer a more relaxed duplicate session. For those who prefer online play, there's also a virtual session on Monday evenings via Bridgebase Online (BBO). Results from these sessions are posted on the club's website and the English Bridge Union (EBU) portal.
Non-members are welcome to join the Monday online sessions. Interested players should email their BBO username and EBU number to Alan, who will provide all necessary details. Members can invite guests by supplying Alan with the guest's details in advance. The cost for each session is £4, payable on the BBO website.
As a club affiliated with the EBU, Sobell Bridge Club offers a partner-finding service through Pianola and runs beginners' lessons twice a year. Throughout the year, the club also holds various events, including a Christmas party, to support the Michael Sobell House at Mount Vernon Hospital. All table monies collected are donated to local charities.
Anyone interested in joining the club or meeting its members can contact the membership secretary, Gwen Cozens, for more information. Detailed club history is available on the club's website, highlighting its mission to fundraise for the Michael Sobell Hospice—having raised over £901,468 to date. Donations can be made through the Harlington Hospice website, specifying the Michael Sobell operation if preferred.
Members receive regular updates on club news and events via email through Pianola. If you're not receiving these emails, please check your spam folder and mark them as “not spam.” Adding info@sobell-bridge.uk to your address book can also help.
Alan McBride and everyone at the Sobell Bridge Club in Northwood invite you to join a friendly and inclusive community. Whether you join face-to-face or online, there's plenty of opportunity to improve your skills, find partners, and contribute to a worthy cause.
