Shotokan Karate Club is the esteemed Gursharan Sahota. Gursharan is a highly experienced practitioner of Shotokan Karate and holds an impressive 8th Dan black belt. His journey in martial arts began at the age of 14 when he started training at a local club in Bedford, UK. Four years later, he earned the prestigious 1st Dan black belt.
Gursharan's dedication and passion for karate led him to explore his skills further. In 1984, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of training in a Japanese dojo under the guidance of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. This experience left a lasting impact on Gursharan and solidified his commitment to karate as a way of life.
In 1981, Gursharan opened his first karate club in Luton/Dunstable, which has now become the headquarters of his association, TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association). TISKA, founded in 1993, is now one of the largest karate associations in the UK.
Despite his extensive experience and achievements, Gursharan's love for karate remains unwavering. He currently teaches over 35 classes a week in the UK and regularly conducts master classes internationally. Gursharan has successfully trained numerous students of all ages, guiding them to reach black belt standard and beyond.
Apart from his contributions to karate, Gursharan is actively involved in charitable endeavours. He funds projects in India, including the construction of a new school, and subsidises trips for surgeons to operate on underprivileged children in third-world countries.
The Ely, Newmarket and Soham Shotokan Karate Clubs, which have been established for over 10 years, are known for their strong family-oriented environment. Students of all ages, from as young as 4 to adults, train together in a supportive atmosphere. Lessons cover three main areas: Kihon (Basics), Kata (Forms), and Kumite (Sparring). The training also emphasises fitness, ensuring a well-rounded martial arts experience.
Throughout the year, regular gradings are conducted, allowing students to demonstrate their progress and earn higher ranks. These examinations promote self-confidence and a sense of achievement, especially for young students. The club also organises an annual internal competition, offering members the opportunity to compete against their peers from other TISKA clubs across the country.
