About
Soushinkan Kendo Dojo in Rayleigh, Essex, founded in the new millennium, was the area’s first Kendo club. Kendo is Japan’s traditional way of the warrior, evolving from the ancient Kenjutsu schools. Originally developed when live blade training was outlawed, Kendo allowed Samurai to carry on their discipline safely.
Ian, the organiser, wants to highlight Kendo’s benefits – a mix of preserving history, staying fit, and sharpening your mind. Kendo also focuses on principles like kindness, restraint, and courtesy. Though it’s not a street self-defence system, it readies you to recognise and avoid potential dangers, boosting your confidence and self-esteem.
The All Japan Kendo Federation emphasises Kendo’s goal to discipline character through the Katana’s principles. Focus areas for cuts or thrusts in Kendo include the head (Men) and the wrist (Kote).
Soushinkan Kendo Dojo holds practice sessions every Friday from 7pm to 9pm at Fusion Lifestyle Gym in Rayleigh. Visitors from other Dojos are welcome, and beginners can join too. There’s no teaching fee, but £7 (£5 for kids) per session helps cover the hall hire cost.
