The club, located on the east bank of the River Itchen in Woolston, Southampton, competes in coastal regattas and river races along the South Coast, stretching from Swanage to Portsmouth, including the Isle of Wight.

Full membership at Southampton Amateur Rowing Club involves several stages. New members are introduced to their squad and go through sessions to assess fitness and ability. This helps the coaches create a personalised training plan. Members are asked to commit to their squad’s training plan and take part in regatta races throughout the season.

James is also excited about the club's social side. Outside of training, fun social and fundraising events are organised to build camaraderie and support the club. The goal is for all members to enjoy their rowing journey, improve their skills, and make lasting friendships.

Training sessions are Monday to Thursday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM and weekends from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM. During winter, weekday sessions might be land-based due to the dark evenings. Members should aim to attend at least 2–3 sessions per week, though commitment levels can vary.

For 2023, membership prices are set as follows: Adult Rowing – £200 + VAT, Cadet/Sixth Form Rowing – £92 + VAT, Competing Coach – £81 + VAT, Non-Competing Coach – £40 + VAT, Social Member – £15 + VAT, University Student Rowing – £120 + VAT, Voting Social – £110.40 + VAT, Boat Racking – £48 + VAT.
