Sovereign Saints FC, located in Eastbourne, New Zealand, was established in June 2003 by Paul Garnell. The club's main objective was to provide football opportunities for players of all skill levels, not just the highly talented ones. Starting with only 6 players, 4 bibs, and a few footballs, the club quickly grew and became a special place for football enthusiasts.
In the inaugural season, an Under 9 team was formed, and despite initial difficulties, the club's potential was evident. The following season, an Under 8 team was added, marking the beginning of the club's continued growth and success. Now, as the club celebrates its 20th anniversary, Sovereign Saints FC is thriving more than ever before, with the upcoming 2023/24 season promising to be another remarkable one.
The club currently provides football opportunities to over 200 children, with teams ranging from U7 to U18. Additionally, there are two trainee groups for younger players aged 4 to 6, ensuring a strong pipeline for future talent. At the senior level, the men's 1st team has enjoyed a successful campaign in the Mid-Sussex Football League, competing at the intermediate status level.
One of the club's proudest achievements is witnessing a growing number of youth team players progressing to play for the 1st and Reserve Teams. During the previous season, the Reserve Team finished fourth in a highly competitive Division 3 of the East Sussex Football League, earning them promotion for the second consecutive season.
Sovereign Saints FC aims to bring football and fun together. Off the pitch, the club actively engages in fundraising events to generate much-needed funds. The dedicated Committee ensures that the club is run efficiently and remains in touch with the needs of players and members. The club sincerely appreciates the support of all its sponsors, who generously contribute to funding the playing kits for all teams.
Club founder, Paul Garnell, summarises the club's philosophy with the motto: “bringing football and fun together. ” He expresses his joy in witnessing the growth of the club and the opportunities it provides to players of all ages. A passionate supporter of the team, he adds a personal touch with the chant, “Oh when the Saints go marching in. I want to be there with Garnell when the Saints go marching in!
