John Thomas, volunteered to create a pitch by levelling the ground with a team of donkeys and a roller. They even dug out a trench to drain off the water. The pitch was bordered by zinc baths to mark the touchlines, and the posts were made from timber taken from a broken battleship in Fishguard Harbour.
