About
Chris has mapped out the ultimate cycling route for sports enthusiasts. Sustrans Cycle Route 45 kicks off in Chester and races down to Salisbury, covering some of Britain's most iconic landscapes.
Starting in Chester, Route 45 takes you straight to Salisbury, home of the tallest cathedral spire in Britain and the Magna Carta. On the way, you'll pass through Wiltshire, connecting Swindon to Salisbury via Avebury's prehistoric wonders. Ride past the North Wessex Downs and Salisbury Plain, showcasing classic English countryside.
Heading north of Swindon, the path leads through the Cotswold Water Park's 150 lakes and climbs the Cotswold Hills to Cirencester before descending into Nailsworth on traffic-free railway paths and canal towpaths to Stroud and Eastington. The route links up with Route 41 at Saul on the Sharpness Canal, offering varied landscapes throughout.
A popular stretch runs between Worcester and Droitwich over 10 flat miles, perfect for all skill levels. For those looking for a different route back, Route 46 offers an on-road option. This ride will take you through Stourport-on-Severn, Bridgnorth, Whitchurch, and eventually back to Chester.
Be aware, a section in Swindon is closed until August 2024. Check the Swindon Travel Choices website for current information.
Chris reminds all cyclists that while these routes promise an exhilarating ride, they come with inherent risks. Always be prepared, and remember: weather conditions can change the game.
