Welcome to Swanley Bowls Club, a lawn bowls club located in Swanley, New Zealand. Swanley Bowls Club provides a welcoming and social environment for individuals of all ages and fitness levels to enjoy the game of bowls.
As a member of Swanley Bowls Club, you will have access to our excellent facilities, including a well-maintained grass green where you can play singles, pairs, or in teams. The game starts by throwing the jack, a small white ball, down the green. Each team then takes turns rolling their bowls towards the jack, aiming to get as close as possible. The team that gets nearest to the jack wins the “end” and receives a point.
The score is accumulated over 18 or 21 ends, depending on the game format. Players can strategize by attempting to knock their opponents' bowls away from the jack or position their own bowls to block opposition shots. In singles, scoring is slightly different, with the first player to reach 21 points being declared the winner.
Playing bowls at Swanley Bowls Club offers more than just a fun social activity. It also provides a great form of exercise. You may be surprised by the amount of walking you do during a game, as you can cover up to three miles. In addition to the walking, you will also experience a workout for your arms as you perfect your bowling technique and develop your leg muscles through lunging into the throw.
One of the unique aspects of bowls is that it truly is a sport for all, regardless of age, sex, or physical ability. You'll often find children playing alongside adults and individuals of varying fitness levels on the same team. Although the general bowler population tends to be over 55 years old, we also have under 25 and under 18 international teams. Bowls is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone, and we encourage you to give it a try.
