Individual can successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent.
Tauranga BJJ is a leading Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy located in Tauranga, New Zealand. Led by world-class black belt instructor Ryosei Kurihara, who received his black belt from the renowned 10-time world champion, Roger Gracie, our academy provides top-notch instruction for practitioners of all levels, from beginners to experienced Jiu Jitsueiros.
At Tauranga BJJ, we prioritise creating a fun, safe, and friendly atmosphere for our students to train and learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We believe that BJJ is a martial art suitable for people of all ages and sizes. With its focus on technique and leverage, BJJ enables smaller individuals to effectively control and defend themselves against larger opponents.
Our academy offers a 4-week beginners course, providing an easy and structured way for those new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to get started on their journey. This course is designed to teach the fundamental principles and techniques of BJJ, ensuring a solid foundation for future training.
BJJ is a martial art centred around grappling techniques, particularly ground fighting. It teaches students how to control and overcome opponents through the use of leverage and technique. By training in BJJ, individuals can develop the skills necessary to defend themselves against stronger and larger opponents.
We also offer a 2-class trial for experienced martial artists who are looking for a new Jiu Jitsu home. This trial allows them to experience our training environment and determine if our team is the right fit for them. Please note that a non-refundable fee of $40 applies to the trial, and participants are required to pass a police background criminal check.
There are numerous benefits to practising Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Not only does BJJ provide effective self-defence skills, but it also builds a strong sense of community. The BJJ community is known for its tight-knit nature, allowing practitioners to bond with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures who share a common passion.
Furthermore, training consistently in BJJ leads to improved fitness levels. You don't need to be fit before starting BJJ; the training itself will help you get fit. BJJ is a highly enjoyable and rewarding exercise that can push you physically without you even realising how hard you've been working until the end of class.
Lastly, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instils confidence in its practitioners. Overcoming the challenges and mastering the skills in BJJ can boost self-esteem and provide valuable life lessons. This is particularly beneficial for children and adults alike.
