About

Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai Cycleway, located in Auckland, is a new and exciting cycling park that provides a shining path from inland to the sea. This four-stage project is a collaboration between local communities, government officials, and mana whenua, who have gifted the perfect name for the cycleway. The route of the cycleway can be easily observed from the trains on the eastern line to Manukau.

The transformation of the cycleway is truly remarkable. In just over a year, a steep paddock that was once home to horses has been converted into a wide and winding path, connecting Merton Rd and St John's Rd. The inaugural event for Stage 1 of the cycleway was a joyful occasion, with a diverse crowd of locals, politicians, and even school children on their bikes, gathering to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

As the crowd embarked on the newly opened cycleway, the stunning panoramic views of Auckland's landscape were awe-inspiring. From the eastern coastline, with glimpses of the bottom end of Waiheke Island, to Mt Wellington and other prominent landmarks in the south, the vantage point provided by the cycleway is truly unique.

The carefully designed cycleway seamlessly integrates with the existing green corridors and transport routes, offering unexpected perspectives of the city. The sight of a brand new electric train passing by the pathway, while cyclists and pedestrians enjoy their journey, is a testament to the progressive nature of 21st-century Auckland.

The official speeches at the event highlighted the high quality of the cycleway and its strategic location. By connecting the valleys north and south of St John's Rd, Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai opens up new possibilities for cyclists and walkers. The future water crossings over the Orakei and Hobson Bay basins were also eagerly anticipated, as they will further enhance the connectivity of the cycleway.

One remarkable feature of the cycleway design is the inclusion of plateaus on the steeper inclines. These plateaus not only provide convenience for wheelchair users but also ensure the safety of everyone, including the elderly. Taking a moment to pause and appreciate the surroundings, visitors can admire the beautiful pou standing tall along the cycleway. These impressive pou, around 5m high and adorned with intricate detail, truly imbue the path with a sense of place.

Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai Cycleway is more than just a path for cycling and walking. It represents a shared vision of a vibrant and inclusive Auckland, where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to enjoy the outdoors. With each stage of the project, the cycleway will continue to foster a sense of community, promote active transportation, and celebrate the unique beauty of Auckland's landscape.
