About
Baz and Bev Thomas want to share some news about their gym, Te Kura Awhio, in Gisborne. As the only Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Academy in the Gisborne/Tairāwhiti region, Te Kura Awhio is welcoming anyone from beginners to advanced fighters.
Baz and Bev have built a fantastic team of instructors and supporters who are passionate about MMA. With a focus on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and Wrestling, members can trust they’re getting top-notch training in real fighting techniques.
Te Kura Awhio is more than a gym—it’s a community. Baz and Bev encourage everyone to leave egos at the door and train with a positive attitude. No matter your fitness level, you’re welcome here.
The gym is located at 16 Fitzherbert Street, opposite the Tairāwhiti Museum, and offers a variety of classes to fit different schedules. Adult BJJ classes are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, led by Coach Baz and Alex, with two class options to accommodate everyone.
For the early risers, there’s a Dawn Session BJJ class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to start the day right. Youngsters can join too, with BJJ classes for juniors under 8 (Teina) and under 12 (Tuakana) on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
If you’re interested in striking and wrestling, Coach Nick runs alternating training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. For class scheduling and payments, Te Kura Awhio uses ZENPLANNER to make everything easy.
Baz and Bev are proud to be part of the Gisborne fitness community. They invite everyone to come and experience their unique approach to MMA training. Through martial arts, they aim to promote physical and mental well-being, helping everyone achieve their fitness goals and build a strong sense of camaraderie.
