Dear Members of the Telford Sports Community,
Chris, the organiser of Telford Chin Woo, wants to share some exciting news and updates with you. Telford Chin Woo is a dedicated sports club right here in Telford, established in 2010 as a volunteer-led and non-profit Community Amateur Sports Club. Chris is proud to be associated with Sport England and the British Council for Martial Arts, and the club maintains strong connections with the Northern Shaolin Chin Woo Wushu Centre in Malaysia.
All the lead coaches at Telford Chin Woo come with strong credentials, including DBS certifications, first aid, child protection, and full insurance coverage. The club was the first in Telford to be awarded Clubmark by Sport England, reflecting its commitment to safe training practices and structured programming. Over the years, Telford Chin Woo has produced over 50 British Champions and 2 World Champions.
Chris strongly believes in the participation of every member in the club's activities. Whether as a volunteer coach, assistant, or student mentor, individuals are encouraged to contribute to the club's operations and growth. The club offers various pathways, including recreational training, competitive participation, demonstration performances, coaching, judging, and career opportunities in the TV/Film/Stunt industry.
To foster community spirit and friendly competition, Chris organises in-house competitions and awards such as “Student of the Month,” “Volunteer of the Month,” “Newcomer of the Year,” “Most Improved Award,” “Excellent Representation of the Club,” “Best Behaviour Award,” “Excellent Effort,” “Most Committed Award,” “Student Mentor Award,” and the “Chin Woo Spirit Award.”
Chris also engages the club in fundraising efforts to keep costs low for members. Telford Chin Woo supports physical, mental, and social wellbeing, community safety, employment skills, cultural awareness, and increased sports participation. The club works with juniors and adults with disabilities, BMAE groups, individuals facing health challenges, and those from low-income areas.
Beyond the club, Chris leads outreach programmes. Recently, a grant was awarded to provide 30 weeks of free Chinese Martial Arts training for juniors with disabilities. This initiative, running from November 2021 to June 2022, aims to promote inclusivity and provide the benefits of martial arts to everyone.
To support fundraising and outreach, Chris organises activities like sponsored walks up Wrekin, bake sales, raffles, and more. The club has received support from funding bodies such as Sport England, the National Lottery, West Mercia Police, Clr Lee Carter Pride Telford & Wrekin Council, Cash 4 Clubs, Made By Sport, Allen, and many more.
Chris envisions educating people on the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle through sports. Telford Chin Woo values diversity and welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, promoting a culture of inclusivity.
