1981. Since then, the Halifax YMCA Pantomime Society has continued to entertain audiences with their annual pantomimes, showcasing the talents of local performers and bringing joy to the community.
The society welcomes individuals of all ages and experience levels who are interested in the arts and traditions of pantomime. Whether you're a seasoned performer or someone who is curious and eager to learn, the Halifax YMCA Pantomime Society provides a creative and supportive environment for everyone. With no experience necessary, it's a great opportunity to make new friends, develop new skills, and have fun while bringing magical stories to life on stage.
Collaborating closely with the Halifax YMCA, the society comprises enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who come together year after year to produce the largest and highest-quality amateur pantomime in Halifax and Calderdale. Their commitment to excellence shines through in their performances, leaving audiences captivated and delighted.
The society's roots can be traced back to 1950 when it was originally formed as part of the YMCA's Amateur Operatic Society and Pantomime Society. In 1974, the two groups merged to create the Halifax YMCA Pantomime Society, with their first joint performance being “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Geoff Beck, a key figure in the society, played a pivotal role in writing and producing many of the shows until his passing in 1979. A memorial show was held in 1980, and the tradition of producing annual pantomimes continued with “Dick Whittington” in 1981.
The Halifax YMCA Pantomime Society not only provides entertainment for the community but also nurtures and supports local talent, fostering a love for the performing arts. With each production, they create unforgettable memories, laughter, and a sense of community spirit. Be sure to join them for their latest production and experience the magic of pantomime firsthand.
