Available on loan to club members to help them learn the dances. Folk dancing is a social activity that promotes community and friendship. It is a great way to stay active and engage both the mind and body.
The Harrow Folk Dance Club was established in 1970 and has a rich history of promoting various forms of folk dancing. It was initially started as an evening class by founder John Lawes and has since evolved into a vibrant and inclusive club. Over the years, the club has explored different styles of folk dancing, including Maypole dancing, Morris dancing, and American Square-Thro dancing. However, it now focuses primarily on traditional English folk dancing.
As a registered charity, the Harrow Folk Dance Club is affiliated with the English Folk Dance and Song Society. The club is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of English folk dances. It hosts regular sessions on Wednesday afternoons from 2 p. m.
to 4 p. m. at the Vagabonds Tennis Club in Holwell Place, Pinner. The sessions are led by experienced callers who guide participants through the dances and provide instructions during the dance.
No prior knowledge is required, but a basic understanding of left and right foot movements is helpful.
Membership to the Harrow Folk Dance Club is open to individuals of all ages, experience levels, and abilities. Annual membership costs 10, and each session is priced at 3. The club offers a welcoming and friendly environment where attendees don't need to come with a partner. Club members are always eager to help newcomers learn the dances and ensure everyone can join in the fun.
In addition to the regular sessions, the Harrow Folk Dance Club has hosted special events in the past, including Saturday evening dances and Playford Balls, where participants sometimes dress in period costumes. Some club members have also attended summer Dance Festivals around the country and brought back new dances for everyone to try.
The Harrow Folk Dance Club's annual programme is focused on the Wednesday afternoon sessions at the Vagabonds Clubhouse. During these sessions, participants have the opportunity to learn and practise traditional English folk dances. At present, no other special events are planned, but the club remains open to exploring new opportunities for members to engage with the world of folk dancing.
If you're interested in folk dancing and want to give it a try, the Harrow Folk Dance Club welcomes newcomers and often waives the fee for the first couple of sessions. It's a chance to experience the joy of folk dancing, meet new people, and enjoy gentle exercise in congenial company. For more information, you can contact Roy Martin at 020 8868 7526.
