Welcome to The Oxford Aikikai, a renowned Aikido club and martial arts school located in Oxford, New Zealand. Established in 1971, The Oxford Aikikai brings together the Oxford University Aikido Club and the Oxford City Aikido Club, forming a thriving Aikido community. The club operates from the Oxford University Sports Centre, which offers exceptional facilities including a purpose-built dojo (practise room) and traditional tatami (practise mats) that are permanently laid.
One of the unique advantages of being a part of The Oxford Aikikai is the opportunity for year-round practise, including during University vacations. The club is a proud member of the British Aikido Federation (BAF) and adheres to a traditional approach to Aikido training. Members are encouraged to participate in regular courses conducted by senior BAF instructors throughout the year, allowing for continuous skill development.
The dedicated instructors at The Oxford Aikikai include Nick Belshaw (4th Dan, fukushidoin), Graham Jones (4th Dan), and Chris Brunsdon (3rd Dan). Their expertise, experience, and passion for Aikido ensure high-quality training sessions catered to practitioners of all levels. The schedule offers a range of options throughout the week, including focused classes for beginners and mixed classes open to all levels.
Aikido, often referred to as “Traditional Aikido,” is the primary discipline taught at The Oxford Aikikai. While various Aikido styles have emerged over the years, the club remains loyal to the orthodox Aikido as envisioned by the Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba (O-sensei). This weapon-less system of self-defence promotes non-violence and non-competition, making it an excellent practise for personal growth and self-improvement.
