The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts Scarborough is a prestigious performing arts group that offers a range of classes and programmes for children and young adults in Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre (singing & dancing), and Film & Television. Located at the YMCA Theatre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, the academy welcomes students from various areas including Scarborough, Scalby, Seamer, Ayton, Whitby, Filey, and Bridlington.
Under the dedicated leadership of Principal James Aconley, the academy is committed to providing high quality and up-to-date performing arts tuition while also creating a fun, safe, and happy environment for students. The aim is to not only develop their skills in performing arts but also build confidence, learn life skills, and make lasting friendships.
The academy operates every Sunday from 9:45am to 1:00pm, with specific classes for different age groups. The Poppets class is from 10:00am to 11:30am, catering to the youngest performers. The academy offers a free taster session for those interested in joining, and enrolment can be done online to secure a spot.
The academy is proud to have a talented and passionate team of teachers and assistants. Isabelle is the PQA Poppets teacher, bringing enthusiasm and a love for working with young children. Adam is the Academy Assistant, supporting the smooth running of the Scarborough branch. Fleur is another Academy Assistant, having been a student at PQA Scarborough herself.
James Aconley serves as the Principal, ensuring the highest standards of training and education. Natalie is the Vice Principal, assisting in the overall management of the academy. Elise is the Musical Theatre teacher, excited to share her expertise and work with the students. Devan is the experienced Drama & Comedy teacher, having completed professional training in Musical Theatre.
Chris is the knowledgeable Film & TV teacher, bringing a wealth of experience to the academy.
The academy offers a range of modules to cater to different interests and talents. The Musical Theatre classes combine singing, dancing, and acting to create well-rounded performers. The Film & Television module focuses on nurturing skills in the film and television industry, while the Comedy & Drama module teaches students about different theatrical forms. These modules also come with added benefits such as PQA Live, which allows for virtual classes during lockdowns or venue unavailability.
Students also have the exciting opportunity to perform on stage at top West End theatres and can work towards achieving RSL PQA qualifications. Additionally, the academy organises masterclasses with industry professionals, further enhancing the learning experience.
