Welcome to Thorpe Hall Golf Club, located in Southend-on-Sea. With a rich history dating back to 1086, the origins of Thorpe Hall can be traced to the Domesday Book, where reference is made to “Thorpe-hall”. The name Thorpe is of Scandinavian origin, signifying a hamlet during the Danish supremacy.
In 1906, Colonel Ynyr Henry Burges, along with Kenneth Costley-White and Bert Batley, began transforming the farmland into Thorpe Hall Golf Club. A description of the golf course from a report in 1907 stated that “the turf of the greens is pretty well as good as it can possibly be close and short, and their naturally undulating character affords ideal putting. ” Today, the course maintains the same high standards.
Thorpe Hall Golf Club is a traditional members club, overseen by a Board of Directors and respective Ladies and Men's committees. The Directors, including the Ladies and Men's Captains, make executive decisions relating to the club's day-to-day operation. The Ladies and Men's committees manage competitions and handicaps, while a dedicated Greens committee oversees matters related to the golf course.
One of the unique features of Thorpe Hall Golf Club is the absence of a tee booking system for social golf. However, tee times are allocated for competitions and Society bookings. This allows members and guests to enjoy the course in a relaxed and flexible manner.
