Gary here, just wanted to give a shout-out to all the TISKA Karate Southall community. You might already know our club in Southall and the great things we do, but I thought I'd send a quick update.
Our club offers classes in Shotokan Karate, focusing on balance, coordination, self-confidence, and discipline. We’re open to everyone – all ages and families are welcome. Plus, if you’re new, we offer a free trial for beginners.
Gursharan Sahota, our chief instructor, has an impressive journey. Born in Kenya and moving to the UK at 12, he kicked off his karate career at 14 in Bedford. By 18, he'd earned his black belt. Gursharan didn’t just stop there; he’s competed in loads of kata and kumite events, both nationally and internationally.
The real game-changer for Gursharan came in 1984 during a visit to Japan. Training with Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa was a pivotal moment, inspiring him to fully commit to karate. He set up his first club in Luton/Dunstable back in 1981, which is now TISKA’s HQ. By 1993, he founded TISKA, and it’s grown into one of the UK's largest karate associations. Gursharan still teaches over 35 classes weekly and runs master classes all over the world. He’s helped lots of students achieve their black belts and beyond.
Outside karate, Gursharan’s into charity work. He’s particularly focused on funding surgeries for underprivileged kids and has supported various projects in India, including building a new school. At home in Buckinghamshire, he’s happily married with a son and daughter who also seem keen to follow in his footsteps.
