Tongariro River Rafting, the local rafting club in Tūrangi, is thrilled to announce the Tongariro Blue Duck Experience! This hands-on white water rafting tour offers participants a truly unique opportunity to protect the rare and endangered Whio, also known as the Blue Duck, while enjoying an exhilarating rafting adventure on the stunning Tongariro River.
Starting at our Rafting Centre located at 95 Atirau Rd, Tūrangi, this tour costs $194.00 per person. We kindly ask all participants to arrive at the base 15 minutes prior to the departure time. Don't forget to bring your swimwear, towel, and most importantly, a sense of adventure! Please note that the minimum age to join in on the fun is 13 years old.
One of the highlights of this tour is the opportunity to contribute to the conservation efforts for the Whio population. With less than 3,000 of these incredible birds remaining in New Zealand, it's crucial that we do everything we can to protect them. On our tour, we'll make stops at remote and beautiful spots along the riverbank to check predator traps and ensure the safety of these magnificent creatures.
The Whio's survival is constantly threatened by predators such as stoats, cats, dogs, ferrets, and rats, which were introduced to New Zealand by human settlers. Additionally, the Whio strongly relies on clean and pollution-free waters, serving as a vital indicator of a healthy river. By joining the Tongariro Blue Duck Experience, you're actively playing a vital role in safeguarding and even increasing the Whio population.
But this tour is not just about rafting—it's also a conservation effort. Our aim is to combine the excitement of navigating Grade 3 rapids with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. During the tour, our knowledgeable guides will provide expert commentary, assist you in spotting the Whio in their natural habitat, and educate you about this vital conservation project. We believe in creating a personal and immersive experience, which is why we limit each trip to a maximum of 10 participants. This ensures that you'll receive personalised attention and feel a real connection to the cause.
Before embarking on your rafting adventure, we'll make sure you're kitted out with all the necessary safety gear, including wetsuits and extra layers to keep you warm. Our experienced Rafting Guides will provide a brief on-shore briefing to ensure everyone is ready for the thrilling experience that awaits them on the Tongariro River. The Grade 3 rapids are suitable for both first-time rafters and nature enthusiasts, guaranteeing an unforgettable adventure.
As if that weren't enough, by participating in the Tongariro Blue Duck Experience, you're also directly contributing to our conservation trust through a portion of the trip price. So not only will you have an incredible time, but you'll also be making a positive impact on the Whio population.
