Robin, the organiser of TRIYA Sailing School, also known as the Tup Radford Intercollegiate Yachting Academy, invites the sports community to explore sailing adventures right here in Evans Bay, Wellington. The school provides a range of yachting opportunities tailored for young college students passionate about sailing.
At TRIYA Sailing School, students have the chance to join various programmes, including sailing lessons, team racing, and fleet racing. The school boasts a fleet of international 420 class boats, perfect for secondary students looking to get started with team racing and fleet sailing.
The Learn to Sail programme is specially designed for Year 9-13 students and runs during Terms 1 and 4. This foundational course offers a complete curriculum covering essential skills like boat safety, yacht rigging, knot-tying, capsize recovery, teamwork, yacht steering, boat handling, sailing rules, sail adjustments, and understanding weather and tides.
The programme is held on Fridays during the summer terms, aiming for around 10 weeks of sailing. In case of bad weather, theory and other sailing-related activities are planned indoors. The curriculum aligns with Yachting New Zealand's Level I and Level II standards and is taught by qualified instructors.
If there's enough interest, the Learn to Sail programme can include additional days on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, focusing on both Learn to Sail and Sailing Development. Wednesdays are set aside for Teams Racing.
The cost is $190 per term, due before the second day of the course. Refunds are only given if the course is cancelled. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres confidently and complete the necessary enrolment and fee payment before starting.
Safety is a top priority at TRIYA Sailing School. Parents or guardians must give consent for their teenagers to participate, acknowledging the inherent risks of sailing. They also agree that TRIYA and its staff are not responsible for any injury or loss during activities.
For those keen to join or seeking more information, registration queries can be sent to triyamanager@gmail.com. TRIYA Sailing School is open to sponsorship opportunities and encourages the growth of yachting skills and knowledge beyond their programmes.
