Brendan O'Dea would like to extend a warm welcome to the Union Rowing Club (URC), a cornerstone of Canterbury's sports community since its founding in 1864. Situated in Christchurch, URC boasts a rich history of achievements on both national and international stages, earning widespread respect in the rowing world.
URC is open to everyone, from novices to seasoned athletes. The club offers a six-week Learn-to-Row programme, designed to equip participants with the essential skills required to row proficiently. This programme runs several times a year, and those interested are encouraged to contact Deb Hymers-Ross, the Club Captain, for further details and registration.
Safety is paramount at URC. Brendan wants to remind everyone that maintaining safety standards is a collective responsibility. The club has a strategic plan in place to ensure guidelines are adhered to, fostering a secure and supportive atmosphere for all rowers.
The sense of community at URC is something Brendan values deeply. The club promotes a welcoming environment where rowers, no matter their experience level, can come together and grow in their sport. The committee, guided by Brendan, works diligently to provide high-quality facilities, coaching, and opportunities to compete in regattas locally and abroad.
URC is appreciative of its sponsors, such as the Air Rescue Trust, CERT, Lion Foundation, NZCT, NZ Racing Board, Pub Charity, Southern Trust, and The Mainland Foundation. Their support has been instrumental in providing the club with essential equipment and resources, contributing to URC’s ongoing success.
As President, Brendan is dedicated to ensuring URC remains a thriving hub for rowers in Christchurch. Despite the challenges within the rowing community, he believes URC will continue to be integral in advancing the sport in the region.
Deb Hymers-Ross, the Club Captain, began rowing at 30 and has since become an advocate for the Learn-to-Row programme. She recognises rowing's potential to transform lives, whether through competitive club or masters rowing, or as a recreational activity. Deb is committed to providing quality equipment, coaching, and competition opportunities to enhance the rowing experience for all members.
URC invites rowing enthusiasts at all levels to join their dynamic community. Whether you're new to the sport or an experienced rower, URC offers the resources and support you need to reach your rowing aspirations. Join today and experience the joy of rowing, camaraderie, and fitness.
