Tom welcomes everyone to the Upnor Sailing Club, nestled in the stunning city of Rochester in the heart of North Kent. Established in the early '60s, Tom's club has evolved into one of the premier sailing locations, renowned for its top-notch facilities and competitive prices.
Sailors will find 86 sheltered moorings on the Medway, conveniently near the Chatham Historic Dockyard. A private pontoon allows easy dinghy launches and yacht docking for loading and unloading. The site also includes ample dinghy and tender storage and two scrubbing docks. The clubhouse, once three bargees cottages, was transformed by the club in the mid-'80s and now features a club room with a well-stocked bar, a balcony with stunning river views, a galley, and full amenities including toilets, showers, secure parking, storage sheds, workshops, and an outboard store.
Located just 40 minutes from London, the Upnor Sailing Club benefits from excellent road, rail, and sea links. The Medway River, known for its rich nautical and natural heritage, offers miles of sheltered waters and diverse wildlife like seals and seabirds, making it a hub for exploration. The club's strategic position near the Thames estuary swatchways, Essex and Suffolk rivers, and northern European ports makes it perfect for weekend cruises.
Tom's club is known for its vibrant social, cruising, and race programmes. The season is packed with various cruises suitable for all boats and skill levels, including some that require passports for longer journeys. Fun races are part of the mix, giving members a chance to test their sailing prowess.
Social events are a core part of the club, ranging from casual barbecues and spit roasts to formal black-tie dinners. Throughout winter, Friday evenings feature guest speakers, creating an engaging atmosphere. The club bar is a lively spot on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, fostering a sense of camaraderie among members.
At Upnor Sailing Club, there's a strong tradition of members contributing their time and skills to maintain the club's facilities. Bar service, security patrols, and general maintenance are shared duties, promoting a sense of community and helping to keep costs low, enabling the club to offer excellent facilities at competitive prices.
