The Wellington School of Tai Chi Chuan, located in Lower Hutt, is a renowned martial arts club specialising in Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and self-defence classes. The school offers a wide range of classes and activities, including hand forms, sword, walking stick, short staff, fan forms, and sabre techniques.
With classes available on nine different levels, students have the opportunity to learn and progress at their own pace. The school's main location is in Petone, offering classes every day except public holidays. Additionally, there are Tuesday night classes at Silverstream.
The class timetable is well-structured and caters to various levels of expertise. Monday classes include Level 1 for beginners, focusing on the 24 Hand and 18 Qi Gong forms, while the evening classes cover a range of advanced forms such as 24 forms, 32 Sword, 42 Sword, 18 Cane forms, and 13 Sabre Sun Style. Tuesday classes are designed for Levels 7 to 9 and cover all hand forms, including 48 Short Staff, 32 Sabre, and Sun Style.
The school also offers classes on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, providing flexibility for students to choose the most suitable class times and levels. Please note that there are no classes on public holidays or over long weekends.
In addition to Tai Chi classes, the Wellington School of Tai Chi Chuan previously offered meditation classes, but currently, there are no meditation classes available.
The school was established by Hennie Barnard on August 1, 2001, in response to continuous requests from his students to take their Tai Chi practise to a higher level. Initially, classes were held at various town halls and school halls before finding a permanent location in the central business area of Hutt City. The school premises were revamped and officially opened on August 1, 2003, by Mr. Glen Keith, President of the New Zealand Chinese Martial Arts and International Wu Shu Council.
The Wellington School of Tai Chi Chuan takes great pride in its lineage and focuses primarily on Yang Style. The school offers a supportive and inclusive environment for students of all ages and skill levels, providing a holistic approach to martial arts training.
