Wessex Traditional Martial Arts

Wessex Traditional Martial Arts is a well-established Karate and Martial Arts club located in the picturesque seaside town of Weymouth, Dorset. As the Honbu or central dojo for Wessex Karate Academy, the club offers classes in Go-Ju Ryu Karate and Ryu Kyu Kobudo throughout south Dorset.

The club's main dojo, located at Unit A4, 83 Lynch Lane, A+R Trading Estate, provides a top-class venue for various martial arts groups and martial arts-based fitness classes. Moreover, the dojo is open outside of regular class times, allowing members to engage in extra training or private one-on-one classes.

Established in 1980/1, Wessex Karate Academy has a rich history and deep roots in the community. It was originally formed by Sensei Craig Nevitt in Dorchester and was later taken over by his student Mark Caples, who merged it with his club in Weymouth. In 1998, Pete Thompson took over all three dojos and formed Wessex Karate Academy. The academy has since expanded, adding another club in Milborne St Andrew in 2005.

Over the years, Wessex Karate Academy has produced accomplished martial artists, with 42 students achieving black belt rank and a total of 80 Dan gradings in front of GKI chief instructors. The club takes pride in its track record of producing local and national champions, with 14 students representing the UK or England in Go-Ju Ryu Karate.

Currently, Wessex Karate Academy runs eight classes a week for both children and adults in various locations across south Dorset. With over 100 members, including 20 training black belts and eight qualified instructors, the club provides a supportive and inclusive environment for martial arts enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the dojo temporarily closed but has now reopened, implementing social distancing guidelines and limiting class sizes. Some clubs and classes within the academy have resumed operations, with modified schedules and booking systems in place. Participants are advised to check the timetable and contact their instructors before attending.

As a forward-thinking martial arts organisation, Wessex Karate Academy also offers online classes for those unable to attend in person. Current members can access these classes through the academy's Facebook page, while non-members can visit the WKA main website for more information.
