The history of West City Baseball Club dates back to its founding in 1997. Team president Wayne McCullough discovered McLeod Park, a corner spot in Te Atatu, which could be transformed into a permanent infield, providing a better playing surface compared to the temporary field at Stafford Park. In the spring of 1997, McCullough organised a meeting at McLeod Park to gather people interested in playing baseball. Mike Rielly, who later became West City's senior coach, was among those who attended.
After obtaining support from the city council and the local soccer club, West City Baseball Club began to establish itself. Significant milestones include hosting an All-Star day in 1999, which brought together players from various local and regional clubs. The club also hosted a visiting team of Under-19 players from the United States in 2000 and 2001, thanks to the sponsorship of People to People.
In 2002, West City Baseball Club became an official incorporated organisation under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908, solidifying its status as a separate legal entity. Gareth Hooton took over as club president in 2007, ushering in a new era for West City Baseball.
The West City premier Men's Team has been a force to reckon with, winning the Auckland Championship consistently for the past 12 seasons. Currently, they are the three-time defending National Club Champions, with victories in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Under the leadership of Head Coach Alan Lotze, the team achieved a remarkable 20-5 record in his first season in 2008, securing the Auckland title and reclaiming the National Club Championship in 2009.
On November 1, 2014, the McLeod Park baseball diamond was officially opened, marking a significant milestone in West City Baseball Club's history. The support of the Henderson-Massey Local Board has been instrumental in the development and growth of the club.
At West City Baseball Club, we pride ourselves on providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for players of all ages and skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, join us at West City Baseball Club and be a part of the vibrant baseball community in Auckland's West!
