Westcliff RFC is deeply saddened to announce the passing of John McConnell, a former rugby player at the club. John contributed to the club's success from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, primarily playing at Lions level and occasionally representing the 1st XV. He was also a valued member of the OWCC, serving as the 2nd XI captain for several seasons. Beyond rugby, John was known for his love of walking and embarked on many rambling and walking tours across England and abroad.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife Jenny, as well as John's daughters and grandchildren. A celebration of John's life will be held on Tuesday, November 21, at the Silvester Horne Institute, Church Stretton.
The club is also mourning the loss of John Shingleton, a devoted member who made significant contributions both on and off the field. John played for nearly 20 years, primarily in the 1st XV and the Lions, starting as a second-row player and later transitioning to prop. Though not keen on the offside law, he was a formidable presence. The club is deeply saddened by John's passing and extends its condolences to his loved ones.
At Westcliff Rugby Football Club, they believe in the power of rugby to unite players from diverse backgrounds. With a focus on inclusivity and the core values of the sport, Westcliff RFC welcomes individuals of all levels to join their community on and off the field. Together, they strive for excellence while promoting teamwork, respect, and enjoyment for the game.
