About

Wimborne Wagtails Swimming Club for the Disabled, based in East Dorset, is a local club dedicated to providing swimming, water therapy, swim awards, galas, and social activities for individuals with a wide range of disabilities and health conditions. Since becoming a charity in 2015, Wimborne Wagtails has been committed to offering a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals with physical, learning, or hidden disabilities, as well as those recovering from operations or illnesses, or individuals with health conditions that can benefit from swimming.

The club warmly welcomes members of all ages, as well as their supporting family, carers, and friends. Additionally, the club has a group of trained swim teachers and helpers who are available in the water to provide assistance, subject to availability.

The dedicated and passionate trustees and club organisers of Wimborne Wagtails include Julian Vernon as the Chairman, Sarah McDonald as the Vice Chair, Alexandra Tuckey as the Treasurer and Secretary, David Allen as the PR Officer, Ros Barton as the Safeguarding Representative, Jo Sepkes-Jones as the Admin Support, Janet Grey as the Swim Representative, and Michelle Wilcox as the Swim Teacher. The club also benefits from the support of Di, Ossie, Ann, and Janet who serve as valuable Swim Helpers. Julian Vernon is also responsible for Meet and Greet duties, ensuring all members feel welcome and supported.

The club's regular swimming sessions take place every Saturday at the Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre on Blandford Road in Wimborne, from 11:15am to 1:00pm. Wimborne Wagtails currently runs two sessions, with the first session having three lanes available for lane swimming, creating a quieter environment. The second session offers one lane for lane swimming, followed by an open swimming session, which is particularly suitable for children and their carers or those who prefer a more relaxed swimming experience. The club also offers flexibility regarding swimming times, allowing members to choose when they swim on Saturdays without strict session times.

During the festive season, Wimborne Wagtails holds special Christmas swim sessions. The last session of the year takes place on December 16th, followed by a two-week break. The club resumes its regular sessions on January 6th the following year.

In recent news, the club bid farewell to Rita, who decided to retire after 25 years of dedicated service to Wimborne Wagtails. Rita made a significant impact on many swimmers, helping them gain confidence in the water and improve their swimming technique. Her foot massages became legendary among club members, and she will be greatly missed.

Wimborne Wagtails hosted a successful Christmas party on December 9th, featuring various activities and a raffle. Swim helper Di won the top raffle prize, adding to the excitement of the event. The club also announced the date for their upcoming Gala, which will take place on Saturday, February 17th at Canford School. Members are encouraged to mark their calendars for this exciting event.

Wimborne Wagtails takes great pride in recognising the accomplishments of its swimmers. Cups were awarded to Oscar, Sam, Ru, Ann, and David, while medals were presented to Marie, Polly, Rafe, and Jo. Many swimmers also received distance award certificates, acknowledging their individual achievements.
