Nigel Leavesley extends a warm welcome to the sports community on behalf of Wingerworth Fencing Club (WFC). Situated in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, WFC has been a hub for epee fencing since its establishment in 2000. It’s the go-to place for fencers of all skill levels, from beginners to national champions. Recognised as the best epee club in the East Midlands, the club draws individuals from both the local area and beyond.
Nigel and his team invite everyone, regardless of experience, to join the club’s friendly and supportive environment. The club boasts state-of-the-art facilities and a team of qualified coaches dedicated to helping each member achieve their potential.
For newcomers, WFC offers several beginner courses throughout the year. Fencing is a fantastic way to socialise and stay fit, providing a refreshing alternative to typical gym routines. To experience the vibrant atmosphere, Nigel encourages you to visit one evening and perhaps even try fencing for yourself.
WFC is located at Sharley Park Leisure Centre, Market St, Clay Cross, Chesterfield, Derbyshire S45 9LX. Training sessions are held every Wednesday from 6:45 pm to 9 pm for fencers aged 10 and above, and every Friday from 6:45 pm to 8:15 pm for those aged 8 and above.
Session fees are £5.50 for those aged 16 and over, and £4 for ages 10 to 15. Family discounts are available; contact the club for more details. Booking is easily done through the club’s online booking system. Nigel asks that new members, irrespective of their experience level, reach out before booking.
Uniquely, Wingerworth Fencing Club does not charge an annual membership fee, making it accessible to everyone passionate about fencing. The beginner courses, typically lasting six hours, will set you on the path to confidently join the club. Course fees vary, so do contact WFC to discuss options and availability.
Operating under charity number 1155733 since 11 February 2014, WFC is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This status requires adherence to strict regulations and accountability to members and the wider community.
Nigel works with an enthusiastic team of trustees and committee members who ensure the club runs smoothly. Trustees include Nigel Leavesley, Ian Drew, Sally Peat, Paul Williams, Louise Leavesley, Kim Healm, and Mark Ward Thomas Hardy. The committee, guiding the club’s strategic direction, consists of Nigel Leavesley (Chair), Ian Drew (Treasurer and Covid-19 Officer), Sally Peat (Secretary), and Phil Drury (Welfare Officer).
The club is proud to nurture young talent through initiatives like the Derbyshire Junior Fencing Series, giving junior fencers competitive opportunities close to home. The series, open to all levels, includes three epee competitions held at various locations across Derbyshire. Medals are awarded to the top three in each age group, with points earned at each event.
