Vying for my talents," said Willie.
During his college career, Willie excelled on the basketball court and developed a deep understanding of the game. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Willie pursued his passion for coaching and began working at various sports camps and clinics.
In 2017, Willie made the move to Evandale and founded the Wings Basketball Academy. His goal was to create a place where young athletes could receive high-quality coaching and training to develop their skills and reach their full potential in basketball.
The Wings Basketball Academy offers programmes for athletes aged 4-18, catering to beginners as well as those at the elite level. Players train throughout the year in an academy setting, receiving hands-on coaching from accredited state and high school coaches. These coaches have Level-0 to 3 qualifications and extensive experience in youth sports development.
One of the core principles at Wings Basketball Academy is the emphasis on teaching the fundamentals of basketball. Whether it's team fundamentals or individual skills, offensive or defensive techniques, the academy believes that mastering these fundamentals is essential for players to excel on the court.
Since its inception, the Wings Basketball Academy has grown significantly. From starting with just one team, they now have 20 teams consisting of both elite and beginner level players. Their success is evident from their participation in the inaugural carnival in 2018, where they emerged victorious against U14 div. 2 level players and clinched the Bearcats Carnival Grand Final against the Southern Tigers.
Willie and his team at the Wings Basketball Academy are dedicated to providing the best coaching and training possible. They aim to produce players with a high basketball IQ and technical knowledge, while instilling a passion for the game and a desire to give back to the sport.
