Wirral Applied Fist Kung Fu Academy is a renowned martial arts club located in the picturesque town of Wirral, New Zealand. Founded in 2000 by Chief Instructor Gary Shepard, the academy has been dedicated to teaching traditional Chinese Kung Fu and effective self-defence techniques for over two decades.
Chief Instructor Gary Shepard brings over 40 years of martial arts experience to the academy. Having trained in Wing Chun, Hung Gar, Choi Lai Fut Kung Fu, and Ju Jitsu, he has honed his skills under the guidance of renowned instructors such as Derek Gordon, Bill Bamber, Jimmy Chan, and George Ho. With an unwavering passion for martial arts, Gary established the Wirral Applied Fist Kung Fu Academy to share his knowledge and expertise with others.
At Wirral Applied Fist Kung Fu Academy, students can expect to learn a variety of kung fu styles, including Hung Gar, Choy Lai Fut, Wing Chun, and Ju Jitsu. The academy places great emphasis on incorporating the most effective aspects of traditional Kung Fu, making it a comprehensive and dynamic self-defence system for the modern day.
The academy welcomes students of all levels, from absolute beginners to those with previous martial arts experience. With classes held every Monday from 6. 30pm to 8. 30pm, students have the opportunity to train in a friendly and supportive environment.
The academy prides itself on fostering a sense of camaraderie and encourages students to train and support each other's growth and development.
During each class, students engage in a range of activities designed to enhance their skills and abilities. The class typically begins with a warm-up and stretching routine to prepare the body for training. Students then engage in pad work, which involves combinations of punches, kicks, knee strikes, and elbow strikes. They also learn various self-defence techniques and traditional forms from the main styles of kung fu.
For more experienced students, sparring is offered as an extension to self-defence training.
