The Yangebup Clay Pump Track, located at Perena Rocchi Reserve in Yangebup, is a newly opened facility designed to cater to people of all ages and skill levels. The track was established through the efforts of the Yangebup Progress Association (YPA) and local residents who aimed to provide a fun recreational space for the community.
The track, which cost $65,000 to construct, features a 150-metre loop with sections specifically designed for both beginner and advanced riders. Its layout and design were carefully planned in collaboration with the City of Cockburn, ensuring that it meets the needs and preferences of the riders.
The idea for the pump track was initiated by Corey Gaidzionis, a local resident and supporter of the YPA. Inspired by the success of a similar track in Karratha, Corey approached the Council around 18 months ago with the proposal. However, due to a lack of funds, the project was put on hold. With the help of Cockburn MLA Fran Logan and the Local Projects Local Jobs programme, Corey secured a community funding grant, allowing the project to move forward.
Traditionally, pump tracks are made of clay and consist of banked turns and features that require riders to generate momentum by pumping or using up and down body movements. The pump track at Yangebup follows this same concept, providing an exhilarating riding experience for BMX enthusiasts.
Another pump track project, supported by Connecting South Lake, is currently under construction near the Ottey Neighbourhood and Family Centre in Yangebup. This $60,000 project is expected to be completed by the end of July, further expanding the riding opportunities for the community.
The Yangebup Clay Pump Track is part of the State Government programme aimed at promoting outdoor activities and providing recreational spaces for local communities. Similar projects, such as the Dixon Park pump track in Hamilton Hill, have been well-received by the community since their opening.
