Of oneself and others.
Founded and formulated by Hanshi Terry Coughtrey, a highly experienced and respected martial artist, Zen & Combat Kempo Ju-Jitsu Association is one of the longest-running Kempo Ju-Jitsu associations in the country. Hanshi Coughtrey began his martial arts journey in 1969 and has trained in various disciplines including Wadoryu Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Wing Chun, Wu Shu, Judo, Thai Boxing, Kempo Karate, and unarmed combat.
The Zen & Combat Kempo Ju-Jitsu curriculum is designed for both men and women, from beginner to advanced levels. It focuses on practical street self-defence techniques, incorporating strikes, breakaway techniques, kicks, ground defences, and Edged Weapon Awareness to ensure the safety of students in today's society. The art of Zen Kempo Ryu Ju-Jitsu dates back over 2,000 years and was brought to Britain in the late 19th century. It has since evolved and adapted to meet the needs of modern self-defence.
One unique aspect of Zen & Combat Kempo Ju-Jitsu is its emphasis on developing a calm and focused state of mind. The training incorporates the philosophy of Zen, promoting self-discipline, respect, and a deep understanding of oneself and others. This mental training is just as important as the physical techniques, enabling students to remain calm and composed even in high-pressure situations.
The association offers private lessons for those who prefer individualised instruction and personalised training plans. Additionally, it hosts regular gradings to allow students to progress through the ranks and showcases their skills and dedication.
Zen & Combat Kempo Ju-Jitsu Association has several clubs located in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, including Biggleswade, Baldock, Royston, and Stevenage. Each club offers training sessions at convenient timings to accommodate busy schedules. The highly experienced Technical Director, Tony Maynard, oversees the operations and ensures the quality of instruction at each club.
The association encourages anyone interested in learning martial arts to take advantage of their one-week free trial lessons. This provides prospective students with the opportunity to experience the training firsthand and decide if it aligns with their goals and aspirations.
