Buffalo Rifle Association of Australia

The Buffalo Rifle Association of Australia (BRAA) is a sports club based in Sydney that was established in 2009. The club's primary goal is to promote the use of single-shot, black powder rifles that were commonly used by Buffalo (Bison) Hunters, United States Army, and Settlers during the late 1800s in the American West. BRAA is a formally incorporated and affiliated club with the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA), and membership with SSAA is a prerequisite to joining BRAA. The club is also approved by the NSW Firearms Registry as both a Shooting and Collectors Club for these types of firearms.

BRAA organises regular shoots on their 1000 yard range at Cooyal, which is located near Mudgee. They also host matches at the Nioka range, near Tamworth. The highlight event of the year for BRAA is the annual 'Billy Dixon' Match, held at the Nioka range in September. This range spans 1000 yards but also provides the opportunity to shoot targets at distances of up to 1200 yards.

The 'Billy Dixon' Match is named after the renowned American Scout and Bison hunter who played a significant role in the establishment of the Adobe Walls settlement. During the Second Battle of Adobe Walls, Billy Dixon made history by firing a long-range buffalo rifle shot that hit an Indian riding a horse from a distance of 1538 yards.
