Initially practised by monks, Tae-Kyon evolved as a means of self-defence and was eventually adopted by the Hwa Rang Do, a group of dedicated and fearless youth who defended the Silla kingdom. This art of unarmed combat played a significant role in unifying the three kingdoms of Silla, Koguryo, and Baekebae.
During the Yi Dynasty, the practise of Tae-Kyon was discouraged in favour of literary arts, leading to a decline in its development. The occupation of Korea by the Japanese further suppressed the practise of Tae-Kyon, almost driving it to extinction. However, after liberation, the intense feelings of patriotism and national pride revived the practise of Tae-Kyon, which eventually became known worldwide as Taekwondo.
