The Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club, located in the thriving township of Gawler on the edge of the renowned Barossa Valley, is a proud racing club steeped in history yet progressive in the modern day. Just 50 minutes from Adelaide, it offers an easy escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As one of the first landmarks driving into town, the club welcomes visitors with picturesque rose gardens, lush green lawns, and an impressive new function centre called The Terrace.
Gawler is a unique blend of country and town, situated 42 km north of Adelaide with a community of over 20,000 people. The Gawler Racetrack is easily accessible from the main highway and backs onto Adelaide Road. The racecourse provides significant exposure to increasing commuters travelling to and from Adelaide, as it is bound by the main road and the public rail system. Conveniently, the venue has its own dedicated railway station, making it accessible for punters from various locations.
Horse racing has a long-standing history in Gawler, dating back to the 1840s. The principal race of the state was held in the Gawler locality during this time. The first racecourse, which was not circular but straight, existed in Gawler South. Races would see horses sprint to the end of the track, go around a post, and race back to the winning post.
In 1879, a racing club was formed, and racing commenced at Para Para, a property owned by the Hon. Walter Duffield. However, the races were cancelled the following year. The present Jockey Club was formed in 1891, obtaining a lease of the Evanston racecourse, which was later purchased in 1901 for £1500.
The direction of the races also changed from clockwise to anti-clockwise.
The club prides itself on providing a unique experience for families and individuals attending the races. With a wide range of race days, membership options, sponsorship opportunities, and functions and facilities, the Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club ensures there is something for everyone. Visitors can also explore the merchandise shop and take home a piece of the club's history.
Whether you're a seasoned racegoer or new to the world of horse racing, Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club promises an enjoyable and memorable experience for all.
