About
The Marrickville Marauders is a fencing club run by nationally accredited coach, Jess Brooks, at Marrickville PCYC on Thursday 5-8pm and Saturday 10am-12pm.
This club focuses on developing young fencers from the age of 8 onwards in a fun, challenging and supportive environment. Fencing is a safe and exhilarating sport that develops coordination, balance, agility, and focus. Fencing is often considered ‘physical chess’, requiring the body and mind to work together in order to succeed!
Our primary focus is sabre.
Our training structure
1. Warm up: Involves popular children’s games with a fencing interpretation. Warm up is designed to be fun and prepare the mind and body for the training ahead!
2. Footwork: This part of the training programme is typically done as part of the warm-up. Footwork is a fundamental part of fencing training as it critical to be able to ‘attack’ and ‘retreat’ at great speed and at the right time.
3.
Drills: This involves both offensive and defensive ‘blade work’ combined with footwork, which produces the basic building blocks of a sword fight.
4. Bouts: The final part of the training session is dedicated to free fencing where students have the chance to put into practise all that they’ve learnt!
5.
Individual Lessons: One-on-one lessons are typically given by a coach during training sessions to the more advanced students.
After school classes are also offered at Ferncourt PS on Mondays and Fridays.
