The NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers Inc (NSWCFA) is a sports club based in Sydney, Australia. Established in 1958, it is the recognised representative body for freshwater anglers in the state of New South Wales. The club's main focus is on fisheries management, conservation, regulatory matters, angler access, angling ethics, animal welfare, and politics.
The NSWCFA aims to foster recreational fishing in a healthy and ecologically sustainable environment for present and future generations of anglers. It achieves this by harnessing the energy and local knowledge of regional groups, representing their freshwater angling interests to the government and the public. The club also maintains a productive relationship with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) and other government departments and agencies.
As an independent, incorporated, not-for-profit organisation, the NSWCFA is run by unpaid volunteers and funded through membership fees from organisations and individuals. The club holds monthly Executive Committee meetings and quarterly general meetings for members, interested anglers, and guests. It operates outside the NSW Government and is not funded by the government. The club promotes transparency by publishing full and detailed notices, agendas, minutes, and reports of all meetings.
Additionally, the club conducts democratic annual elections for its executive committee.
The NSWCFA publishes a free monthly email newsletter and maintains an active Facebook page to keep members and the broader angling community informed about news, events, and initiatives related to freshwater fishing in NSW.
The executive committee for the year 2023-24 includes a President, Immediate Past President, Senior Vice President, Vice Presidents for different regions in New South Wales, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Public Officer, and various non-executive officers responsible for environmental management, scientific research, promotions, publications, website management, and legal matters. The club also appoints delegates to represent its interests and participate in committees and associations related to fishing and conservation.
Membership in the NSWCFA is open to fishing clubs, associations, and individuals. Member organisations are entitled to voting positions based on their membership size. The club currently has several member organisations, including the ACT Fly Fishers, The Barrington Club, Bass Kempsey, and many others.
In addition to regular membership, the NSWCFA encourages freshwater anglers to become Foundation Members by making a special contribution. These contributions are used to support the interests of all freshwater anglers in NSW.
Overall, the NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers Inc serves as a vital platform for freshwater anglers in New South Wales. It seeks to represent their interests, promote sustainable fishing practises, and maintain a healthy ecosystem for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
