SA Dragons Abreast Inc (SADA) is a friendly and competitive sports club based in Adelaide, South Australia. The club welcomes individuals of all ages and fitness levels to participate in the exhilarating sport of dragon boating. As one of the fastest-growing team sports in the world, dragon boating combines low-impact exercise, teamwork, and community spirit.
SADA prides itself on its inclusive and supportive environment, where both experienced paddlers and beginners can come together to enjoy the sport. The club believes in the importance of camaraderie and sportsmanship, fostering lasting friendships among its members.
Although dragon boating originated in China over 3,000 years ago, it is now enjoyed by enthusiasts worldwide. SADA takes pride in its historical roots and actively participates in both local and international competitions. The club has competed in events such as the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Festival, Italy, and Indonesia, offering its members the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures.
A standard dragon boat consists of 20 paddlers, a sweep (steerer), and a cox drummer, while smaller boats consist of 10 paddlers. Races vary in length, with the most common distances being 200m, 500m, and 2 km. Team categories range from Open, Mixed, and Women to various age categories, allowing individuals to compete in their preferred divisions.
Dragon boating is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. No special skills are required, and the technique is easy to master. SADA is affiliated with Dragon Boat South Australia (DBSA), the state body for managing the sport, and AusDBF, the national governing body for dragon boat racing in Australia.
In addition to the competitive aspect of the sport, SADA values the sense of community and social gatherings that come with being part of the club. Members have the opportunity to form lasting connexions both on and off the water, with happy hour social gatherings being one of the highlights after a successful day of training or competition.
SADA's commitment to dragon boating is demonstrated through its active involvement in events such as the Dotting of the Eye Ceremony. This ceremonial practise, involving the awakening of the dragon head carved on the boats, is performed by event dignitaries and upholds the traditional roots of the sport.
The club offers various levels of competition, including Juniors, Social, Masters, Grand Masters, and Great Grand Dragons. It also provides a “Social Membership” for those who prefer to stay in shape without the pressure of competing and a “Friends of SADA” membership for individuals who are unable to paddle but still want to stay connected to the club's social activities.
SADA's racing season runs from September to April each year, during which the team competes locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. The Club Crew World Championships, known as 'Dragons Down Under,' took place in Adelaide in 2016, showcasing SADA's commitment to hosting and participating in prestigious events.
For those interested in joining SA Dragons Abreast Inc, the club welcomes new members and offers the opportunity to “Come and Try” the sport. Interested individuals can register their interest on the club's website, and the club will reach out to arrange a suitable time for them to experience dragon boating.
