Tamar Bicycle Users Group (TBUG) is an incorporated not-for-profit organisation based in Launceston. Their main goal is to build a stronger bike riding community in the Tamar region. With a membership fee starting at just $20, TBUG welcomes riders of all levels, from beginners to experienced cyclists. They work closely with local and state governments to advocate for improved bike riding infrastructure and promote a stronger community bike riding culture.
One of the highlights of TBUG is their organised rides, which cater to riders of various skill levels. Whether it's the Thursday evening rides during daylight savings or the Wednesday morning rides, which continue rain or shine, TBUG ensures that there is something for everyone. These rides are open to anyone interested, and they are free of cost. Detailed information about each ride can be found on the TBUG rides page.
By joining TBUG through Bicycle Network, members can enjoy additional benefits. These benefits include 24/7 insurance coverage, a free three-month trial, access to cash back schemes, and member discounts. For more information, interested individuals can visit the Bicycle Network website or contact them directly.
TBUG is also actively involved in community programmes. They have partnered with Reclink Australia, Youth Futures, Launceston Big Picture School, and the University of Tasmania to establish the Launceston Bike Library. This project aims to provide lending and affordable bike hire services to residents in the greater Launceston area who are unable to afford their own bicycles. The community voted for this project as part of TBUG's Great Regional City Challenge (GRCC), which empowers the community to decide which projects will enhance Launceston as a great regional city.
To assist beginner riders, TBUG has created a short video with helpful tips and suggestions. This video is beneficial for riders of all ages who are just starting out on their biking journey.
A recent development for TBUG is their new alliance with Bicycle Network. Over the next six months, TBUG will transition from their existing affiliation agreement with Auscycling to form a partnership with Bicycle Network. This change is motivated by the desire for closer access to local staff and resources, as Bicycle Network prioritises community bike riding rather than focusing solely on major events or races. TBUG has worked closely with Bicycle Network on advocacy campaigns and events that aim to improve bike riding infrastructure and foster a stronger community bike riding culture.
This alliance also brings the added benefit of insurance coverage for TBUG members. Those currently uninsured can take advantage of a free three-month membership trial with full insurance coverage, with the option to continue with permanent coverage thereafter.
TBUG continues to welcome riders who are uninsured, as they can still participate in any TBUG ride. By joining TBUG, individuals not only become part of a vibrant and supportive community but also contribute to the development of a stronger bike riding culture in Launceston and the wider Tamar region.
