About

Abingdon Bowling Club is a prestigious sports club located in Abingdon, New Zealand. Established in 1913 as a Men's Club, it later admitted female players in 1971 and has since become a hub for players of all ages and abilities. The club is affiliated with Bowls England, Royal County of Berkshire Bowling Association, English Short Mat Bowling Association, and Oxfordshire Short Mat Bowling Association.

During the peak season, which runs from May to September, visitors are invited to come and witness the club in action. The green is bustling with activity in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends, providing a perfect opportunity for spectators to relax and enjoy the soothing sight of a bowls match. Whether you are a seasoned bowls enthusiast or a beginner, the Abingdon Bowling Club warmly welcomes all guests. On Friday evenings from 5 to 7pm, the club offers coaching sessions for beginners.

Club bowls, mats, and jacks are readily available for new bowlers, and the only requirement is to bring along soft sole shoes.

For those who decide to join the club, there are numerous playing opportunities available. Friendly mixed matches against local clubs are regularly held on weekends, providing an enjoyable social atmosphere for members. As skills progress, members can participate in leagues such as the Berkshire Kl or KLV leagues for men on Tuesday evenings or Thursday afternoons, and the Berkshire Ridgeway league for women on Thursday evenings.

The Abingdon Bowling Club boasts excellent facilities, including a state-of-the-art six-rink green, which is considered one of the finest in the area. The clubhouse and bar provide a friendly ambiance, catering to the needs of both bowling and social members.

To accommodate bowling enthusiasts even during the winter months, the club introduced short mat bowling in 2014. From late September to early April, members can participate in the Oxfordshire Short Mat afternoon triples league and the evening fours league.

For members and prospective members, the club provides a variety of useful documents in the dedicated document section. This includes The Club Constitution, The Club Handbook, and the New Members Application Form. In a commitment to maintaining a safe environment, CCTV cameras were installed in October 2022, with four cameras running 24 hours a day, ensuring the security of members and their belongings.

Abingdon Bowling Club holds a proud legacy and continues to attract a diverse membership, ranging from teenagers to individuals over 80 years old. With outdoor playing members, indoor short mat members, and social members, the club fosters a vibrant and inclusive community.
