The Albury Wodonga Hash House Harriers Inc. is a sports club based in Wodonga, Victoria. The club is a part of the global Hash House Harriers movement, which started in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1938 and has now spread to various parts of the world. The club consists of both runners and walkers who enjoy running or walking a route set out by the Hare.
After completing the trail, the Hashers and Harriettes (the female members) gather to enjoy the company of fellow club members while indulging in food and/or drink, also known as Nosh. The club meets every Monday evening at 6:30 p. m. to embark on their runs/walks, which typically last between 45 to 60 minutes.
The start/finish locations, known as On On's, can be anywhere within reason and are selected in advance by the Hare.
The Albury Wodonga Hash House Harriers currently consist of around ten to a dozen dedicated Hashers, with an additional fifteen to twenty less dedicated members. The club welcomes people of all fitness levels and backgrounds to join their activities. Occasionally, exceptions may be made for the running schedule, such as on Christmas Day, when the run is held earlier in the day.
During club ceremonies, the Grand Master/Mattress (GM) may impose penalties on Hashers who have behaved in a way that brings the club into disrepute. These penalties often involve “skulling” an alcoholic concoction known as a Down Down. The GM may also call for additional penalty rounds, giving other members the opportunity to “get even” with their fellow Hashers.
After the ceremonies, the club members disperse and reconvene the following week at a new location selected by the next Hare. The Albury Wodonga Hash House Harriers provide a fun and social environment for individuals looking to stay active, enjoy the outdoors, and meet new people.
