The club boasts over 500 members, including rowers from local secondary schools and a diverse range of community members. Avon Rowing Club is based at Kerrs Reach in Christchurch, one of four rowing clubs training in this picturesque location. The club has close ties to the regional rowing performance centre and has produced many rowers who have represented New Zealand at international competitions. This strong connexion to high-performance rowing allows Avon members to benefit from top-level coaching and training facilities.

The club offers a comprehensive rowing programme, catering to both sculling and sweep oar events, for both male and female members. From U15 and novice rowers to masters, there are opportunities for individuals to participate at various levels. Avon Rowing Club also welcomes rowers from overseas who are visiting New Zealand, corporate teams, and university rowers, further enriching the experience and fostering a sense of camaraderie.

The history of the Avon Rowing Club dates back to its founding as the Trades Rowing Club in 1881, with the name changing to Avon in 1884. The club has a rich heritage of success, with evidence of trophy wins dating as far back as 1868. While the name change was necessitated by the rules of the NZ Amateur Rowing Association, the club has always maintained its working-class roots and the strong spirit of its members.
