Bradford Ice Arena, a beloved ice skating club in Bradford, West Yorkshire, is excited to announce an upcoming ice skating event that is sure to thrill and entertain all interested players. This historic ice skating facility has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1966 as the Silver Blades Ice Rink, which was hailed as “The finest rink in the world”.
Back in the day, the rink boasted dazzling features such as coloured lighting in the barriers, elegant chandeliers illuminating the ice, and a luxurious bar and restaurant. The opening gala was a star-studded affair, with performances by renowned skaters Sally Anne Stapleford, John Curry, and ice dancers Bernard Ford and Diane Towler.
Unfortunately, the leisure industry faced a downturn in the 1970s due to the recession, leading to a decline in the rink's condition. Despite the best efforts of ice rink supporters, including protests and a petition with over 4,000 signatures, the rink was closed in 1991, much to the dismay of the public.
However, a glimmer of hope emerged when Rank Leisure agreed to grant an operating lease and annual rent to a new company, Greatcause Ltd, allowing for the rink to be reopened just six weeks later. Extensive repairs and renovations were undertaken, ensuring that the rink could once again be a vibrant hub of activity.
Since then, major investments have been made to keep the rink in top shape. From a new ice resurfacing machine and refurbished viewing gallery to the addition of a dance studio for off-ice training, Bradford Ice Arena has continuously strived to enhance the skating experience for its visitors.
Today, with the installation of a new freezing plant in 2011, the future of Bradford Ice Arena is secure. The club operates with the charitable objectives of Nice Time, a charitable company, in mind. Admission prices and charges are structured to cover the necessary costs and investments for the rink's maintenance and development.
Bradford Ice Arena remains an integral part of local life, offering skating coaches to help visitors improve their skills and enjoy the exhilarating sport of ice skating. So mark your calendars and join us for this exciting ice skating event at Bradford Ice Arena. Lace up your skates, grab your friends, and get ready for some fun on the ice!
