About

Brighton & Hove Fencing Club, located in Brighton, is a well-established fencing school that offers training for individuals at all levels, from beginners to those who compete at an international standard. With over 50 years of history, Brighton & Hove Fencing Club remains a traditional fencing club that starts beginners with the French style non-electric foil.

The club welcomes individuals of all age groups, from juniors to senior citizens, and boasts a diverse range of members, including national and local champions, European and World finalists. However, the club prides itself on creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere where everyone can participate solely for exercise and pleasure, as well as those aspiring to represent the club, county, region, or country.

Brighton & Hove Fencing Club offers training sessions for all three weapons: foil, epee, and sabre, ensuring that all members have the opportunity to engage in their preferred weapon. The club has both male and female members who fence with all three weapons, further enhancing the inclusivity and diversity of the club. Additionally, the club organises social events and club competitions, providing the members with opportunities to bond and foster a sense of club spirit.

To accommodate beginners, Brighton & Hove Fencing Club conducts beginner courses for juniors and adults throughout the year. These courses aim to introduce newcomers to the world of fencing, teaching them the basic moves and techniques. The club also runs demonstrations and outreach courses to popularise the sport and encourage new members to join.

During club nights, the evening commences with a short group warm-up and footwork session. Simultaneously, the apparatus required for electronic scoring is set up. Members then have the option to participate in group instruction sessions or receive individual coaching lessons. Some members also engage in practise fights using the electric equipment, taking turns refereeing the matches.

The senior fencers offer valuable advice on tactics and refereeing to nurture the growth of their fellow members. At the end of the session, participants come together to assist in tidying up the equipment. Some members often head to the local pub to discuss the evening's fencing and enjoy some local ale, where they may even have the opportunity to meet the current World Veterans Champion 2019, Mr. Brian Causton.

In terms of costs, fencing is a relatively inexpensive sport. After the initial beginners' course, where equipment is provided, members will need to purchase their own equipment, as it will be required for future beginners' courses. Safety is of utmost importance at Brighton & Hove Fencing Club. While fencing is not classified as a dangerous sport, it is a combat sport that has the potential for serious injury, although such incidents are extremely rare.

The club is affiliated with and insured by the British Fencing Association (BFA), and it adheres to their safety guidelines and regulations. All equipment used at the club meets or exceeds BFA safety standards. It is vital that all fencers understand and comply with these rules, and with regards to fencers under 18, the club ensures that parents are also aware of the safety guidelines.

Join Brighton & Hove Fencing Club today and become a part of a vibrant and inclusive fencing community that offers training at all levels while emphasising safety, camaraderie, and the joy of the sport.
