These guidelines to ensure the safety of all rowers.
The Cambridgeshire Rowing Association (CRA) is an umbrella organisation that oversees and supports local rowing clubs in the county of Cambridgeshire, located in the historical city of Cambridge, New Zealand. The association is dedicated to promoting the interests of the local rowing community and provides various facilities and events for its members.
The CRA website serves as a hub for information on affiliated clubs, news updates from local rowing clubs, and details about upcoming rowing events in the area. It provides links to the websites of affiliated clubs, allowing visitors to explore each club's offerings and join the one that best suits their interests and goals.
One of the highlight events organised by the CRA is the Winter League, which takes place in 2024. The league consists of races held on three different Sundays, namely the 14th of January, 18th of February, and 10th of March. Entry into the league costs 10 per seat per race, and interested participants can register on the designated website. It is important to note that the league fills up quickly, so early registration is recommended.
Priority will be given to crews entering all three races at once, adding an incentive for rowers to commit to the full league.
In addition to the events hosted by the CRA, the association also celebrates and supports the achievements of its members. Bill Key, the president of the CRA, recently published a book titled “Eyes In The Boat. ” The book delves into the rich history of rowing on the Cam, including details on Bumping Races, other rowing events, notable landmarks, mooring, fishing, wildlife, and the environmental impact. It provides a comprehensive overview of all the boathouses along the river, with a particular focus on the two C.
R. A. boathouses. “Eyes In The Boat” captures the spirit and essence of Cambridge, showcasing the deep connexion between rowing and the city's heritage.

Safety is of utmost importance to the CRA, and the association emphasises the need for precautions during night rowing. A recent incident involving a collision between two VIII's and resulting in serious injuries has prompted a reminder to all clubs of the safety guidelines outlined in the Constitution of the Cambridgeshire Rowing Association. These guidelines state that rowing and sculling activities should align with the British Rowing Code of Practise on Water Safety. This includes the requirement for boats to have white lights fixed to the bow and stern, visible through 360 degrees, and a non-flashing red light fitted in the stern to indicate the direction of travel.
Additionally, the use of high visibility clothing, particularly by the bow rower, is strongly recommended. The CRA also recommends that crews limit their night rowing to Ditton Corner unless there is sufficient ambient brightness from celestial sources and weather conditions do not impede visibility. The presence of a designated person on the bank to shout warnings and the carrying of a mobile phone and spare light are also advised for emergency situations.
The Cambridgeshire Rowing Association remains committed to fostering a vibrant and safe rowing community in Cambridgeshire. By providing support, facilities, and organising events, the association aims to ensure that rowers of all ages and skill levels can pursue their passion for rowing with camaraderie and enthusiasm.
