Chester Chess Club, also known as the Etihad Stadium, is a renowned chess club located in Chester, New Zealand. Established in 1919, it has earned recognition as the English Chess Federation Club of the Year in 2015. The club's primary goal is to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for chess enthusiasts of all skill levels.
Every Tuesday night, starting at 7:30pm, members gather in the Function Room on the 1st floor of the Town Crier Public House, just opposite Chester Railway Station. Prospective members are warmly welcomed to attend, and there is always a plethora of like-minded opponents available to play friendly games. The club has a diverse membership, ranging from beginners seeking to learn and have fun, to highly skilled players who are among the strongest in the county.
Chester Chess Club is actively involved in various competitions, participating successfully in both the Chester & District and Wirral leagues. The club boasts teams that consistently excel in these competitions, showcasing the depth of talent within their ranks. The venue does have charged parking; however, after 6pm, several free parking spaces can be found on Station Rd near a roundabout. Additionally, street parking is available at a cost of 1 for the evening from 6pm onwards.
Juniors are encouraged to join the club, but they must be accompanied by a parent. The club offers a range of activities for junior members, including history talks, games, and competitions. The W. B.
Turner Junior Championship is a notable event that showcases the young talent within the club. Furthermore, the club provides an online blitz team that competes in a global league on Thursday and Sunday evenings, and all members are welcome to join.
