Russell, the organiser from Darnall & Handsworth Chess Club (the “64 Club”), has a message for the sports community. This friendly and social club in Sheffield welcomes chess enthusiasts of all ages, genders, and skill levels, from beginners to Grandmasters.
One event not to be missed is the FIDE Rapidplay, held every two years. The 6th FIDE Rapidplay is set for 2 September 2023 and promises a 6-round Swiss tournament with categories like Open, Major U2000, Intermediate U1750, and Minor U1500. With a total prize fund of £1000, it's a great opportunity for everyone.
For a trip down memory lane, check out the club’s blog and photo gallery. They’ve got snaps and stories from previous Rapidplay events. Plus, the club competes in the Sheffield and District Chess Association, featuring four teams across divisions one, three, and four, offering a range of competition levels.
Club nights are on Mondays at the Stradbroke Community Centre on Richmond Road. There’s parking for about 50 cars and refreshments like tea, coffee, and the occasional biscuit. The centre is wheelchair accessible and has a disabled toilet, making it welcoming for everyone.
New players are always encouraged to drop by on Mondays at 7:30 pm (apart from bank holidays). Russell offers the first three club nights free, so you can pop in and see if it’s your cup of tea, no strings attached.
To keep up with the latest, visitors can subscribe to the club's blog. The 64 Club membership is also a fun way to support the club while enjoying some extra perks.
For details on fixtures and downloadable resources, the club’s website has you covered. You can also find contact info for any queries. Russell and the Darnall & Handsworth Chess Club look forward to meeting new chess lovers and building a friendly community right here in Sheffield.
