Dr Turberville's Morris Dancers is a well-established dance company based in Martock, Somerset. With over 30 years of experience, they are known as the most exciting, dynamic, and skilled morris side in the whole region.
The company takes its name from the renowned oculist, Dr. D'Aubigny Turberville, who was born in Crewkerne, Somerset. They primarily specialise in English Cotswold Morris dances, with some Border Morris dances as well.
Throughout the year, you can witness the rich and varied forms of Morris dancing performed by Dr Turberville's Morris Dancers. They can be found at various events such as village ftes, folk festivals, and even Olympic closing ceremonies. They often perform in local pubs during the Spring and Summer seasons. Just listen for the distinct sound of bells and the clash of wood upon wood, and you'll find them.
The company takes great pride in its history and has an extensive collection of scrapbooks, now in pdf form and published on their website. These scrapbooks can be found on the “Scrap Books” page under the “About the Turbs” tab. It is a testament to the dedication and passion of the dancers and musicians that have been a part of the company over the years.
If you're interested in joining Dr Turberville's Morris Dancers, whether as a dancer, musician, or even just as a fan, they encourage you to contact a member of the side. They promise a warm welcome to anyone who wants to be a part of their vibrant and talented community.
Dr Turberville's Morris Dancers also has “sister” sides, The Knights of King Ina and Pirate Morris, so you may see some familiar faces if you come across these groups. The company also offers music downloads on their website, where you can find copies of their music books lovingly put together by their very own “Master of the Music,” Tony Warren.
The company practises on Tuesdays from 8pm to 10pm at the Ash Village Hall near Martock. It is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in Morris dancing or playing music for the Morris to join in and have a go.
Dr Turberville's Morris Dancers has a busy events calendar for 2019, with performances scheduled in various locations. Some of their upcoming events include St George's Day at the Black Swan in Langport, The Fox & Hounds in Charlton Adam, and Kingsbury Episcopi May Day.
