Ecclesall Chess Club

Welcome to Ecclesall Chess Club, a friendly club located in Sheffield, New Zealand. Whether you're a beginner or a national-level player, our club is open to chess enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. We participate in the Sheffield and District Chess League, with teams competing in various divisions.

Our club nights are held on Wednesdays from 7:30 pm at The Abbey Pub on Chesterfield Road. On non-match nights, members engage in friendly games, analyse their own or others' games, study openings, and explore instructive middle or endgame positions. It's a great opportunity to improve your skills and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded chess enthusiasts.

To join Ecclesall Chess Club, we require an annual membership fee of 15. This fee is mandatory for members wishing to participate in competitive matches. New members are always welcomed and encouraged to attend our club nights. If you're interested in playing, simply drop by on a Wednesday evening after 7:30 pm, and you'll be warmly greeted.

Our club has a successful record in the Sheffield and District League. Currently, we have three teams: the A team in division 1, the B team in division 2, and the C team in division 3. We are also the defending champions in the Richardson Cup, the FA Cup equivalent in chess. Before Covid, we had five teams, including one in division 4 and another in the 400 league.

We hope to resume these teams as membership returns to normal.

Aside from league matches, Ecclesall Chess Club also participates in the “summer” league during the summer months. This year, our B team emerged as the division 3 champions. Additionally, we usually host a club championship, featuring a 5-round Swiss competition held on a designated Sunday a few weeks before our Annual General Meeting (AGM).

We encourage members to contribute news items or games for publication on our website. As new information becomes available, our website will serve as a platform for club news and updates.

Founded in 1974/75 as Ecclesall N. P. C. Chess Club and later renamed Ecclesall Chess Club when we moved to the Robin Hood public house in Millhouses in 1982, our club has a strong constitution and set of rules.

We are dedicated to providing the highest standard of chess for our members while always remembering that chess is, ultimately, just a game.
