Visitors are welcome to come and play at the club during opening hours, and the club also organises various events and tournaments throughout the year. The club has a rich history, being one of the oldest chess clubs in the world, and takes pride in its heritage.
Membership at the Edinburgh Chess Club is open to everyone, regardless of age or skill level. Whether you are a seasoned player looking for competitive matches or a beginner interested in learning and improving your skills, the club welcomes you. Full members are eligible to play for the club in leagues, participate in tournaments, and enjoy all the clubroom facilities. Affiliate members have access to the club's casual play area and can also join in tournaments.
Junior players are provided with training and coaching opportunities, as well as the chance to join the Tiger Cubs junior team in the Edinburgh League.
The club's location in the West End of Edinburgh's New Town area makes it easily accessible. It is situated just west of Princes St, with the clubrooms located on Alva Street. The first floor clubrooms can be reached through the main entrance on the left side of the street, with the club's name clearly displayed on the entryphone system. Visitors are encouraged to drop by on Tuesday nights, which are popular and informal club nights, but the club is generally open for play from Monday to Saturday in the evenings.
The club's opening hours may vary depending on the availability of the caretaker, who will usually open the clubrooms when present in the evenings. Normal member use is from around 7:30pm until 11pm, with junior training typically taking place earlier. League matches and casual play typically start around 7pm or 7:30pm.
