Visitors are welcome to come and play at the club during opening hours, and the club also organises various events and tournaments throughout the year. The club has a rich history, being one of the oldest chess clubs in the world, and takes pride in its heritage.
Membership at the Edinburgh Chess Club is open to everyone, regardless of age or skill level. The first floor clubrooms can be reached through the main entrance on the left side of the street, with the club's name clearly displayed on the entryphone system. Visitors are encouraged to drop by on Tuesday nights, which are popular and informal club nights, but the club is generally open for play from Monday to Saturday in the evenings.
The club's opening hours may vary depending on the availability of the caretaker, who will usually open the clubrooms when present in the evenings. Normal member use is from around 7:30pm until 11pm, with junior training typically taking place earlier. League matches and casual play typically start around 7pm or 7:30pm.
